KRMC offers Ultrasound on-site. This service is provided by a sonographer from Western Imaging Group, an independent radiology practice located in Blacktown. All ultrasounds require a GP referral from a KRMC GP or an external GP. All ultrasounds will be bulk-billed for Medicare card holders. In other cases a private service fee will be charged - please call Reception on 8822 3000 for information on charges.
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of the body’s internal organs or anatomy. It can be used to diagnose numerous conditions and also to look at the development of a foetus (baby).
An ultrasound can take between 15 minutes and one hour, depending on which part of the body is being scanned. During the ultrasound, the sonographer will apply gel to the body and move a transducer or probe over the gel in order to transmit soundwaves and produce an image which can be viewed on a screen.
Sometimes no preparation is needed before an ultrasound but, for certain types of scan, a patient may need to fast for a number of hours or to drink a few glasses of water. Patients will be advised of any necessary preparation on booking an ultrasound.
Apart from a full range of musculoskeletal ultrasounds, the following ultrasounds can also be carried out at the Centre:
- Early pregnancy
- Morphology (18 – 22 weeks pregnancy)
- 22+ weeks pregnancy
- Male pelvic
*Please note that nuchal translucency ultrasounds cannot be carried out at KRMC. Intead, patients will be referred to Western Imaging’s suites at 30 Campbell Street, Blacktown.
